Description

Well written by Michael Fröhlich, The Porsche Tiger and Ferdinand Tank Destroyer: VK 4501 (P) / Porsche Type 101 and the Panzerjäger Ferdinand/Elefant is a detailed technical history of the WWII-tank and tank-destroyer designs of automotive icon Ferdinand Porsche.

The hardcover book recounting some of the more critical WWII tanks is very well suited for Porschephiles, historians, students of history, military nerds and war buffs alike.

As most of us are affectionately well aware, Ferdinand Porsche was an Austrian engineer born in 1875.  In the interwar period, Prof. Porsche founded his automotive consultation and design firm, which gradually grew into today’s preeminent Porsche AG automobile company.

Before the war, the Porsche firm was responsible for the design of the “Volkswagen” — or “People’s Car” — a simple model known today as the VW Beetle.

During the Second World War, however, Mr. Porsche’s firm had no choice but to play a grudging but consequential role in designing military vehicles for the Wehrmacht.

The Porsche Tiger and Ferdinand Tank Destroyer chronicles the developments of Porsche’s massive “Maus” tank and describes the firm’s other armored-vehicle designs, with special emphasis on the VK 4501 (P) Tiger prototype and the “Ferdinand” tank destroyer.

For the first time, Mr. Fröhlich’s study is available in English for your reading pleasure.  His tome is grounded in original reports, manuals and technical drawings unearthed during his intensive research for the book.

Could this be any more complete?! — Incredible source of information on the development of the Porsche Tiger, Ferdinand, and Elefant tanks and tank destroyers. (Combat is not covered.)  The information is both broad and deep and much of it I have not come across before.  Book is very high quality physically as well.”

A volume simply crammed with detail information — If the Ferdinand/Elefant series of German WW2 tank destroyers, along with the developments that led to them, is a subject that interests you; then this massive volume will not disappoint.  It is jammed with photographs and drawings, and contains more than enough detailed information about these machines for those wanting to delve “beneath the surface” when it comes to understanding the mechanical ins and outs of these beasts.”
