Description

Porsche 550 Spyder is a stylish hardcover coffee-table book and fine collector’s edition, created in close collaboration with the Porsche Archive of the Stuttgart sports-car maker.

Stefan Bogner with Glen Smale brilliantly stage the different models and years of the 550 Spyder here.

The 550 Spyder is Porsche’s first purpose-built model intended for sports-car racing.  As such, it is deemed a legendary part of Porsche racing history.

Back in the day, the 550 was notoriously known in the international racing world as Porsche’s “Giant Killer” because it conquered much more formidable race cars, such as higher-powered Ferraris and Jaguars.

In fact, Porsche garnered its first overall motorsports victory in 1956 at Sicily’s famed Targa Florio — in a Porsche 550 Spyder driven by Umberto Maglioli.  Of course, numerous victories and podium finishes followed.

On the darker side of Spyder history, sadly, in 1955 movie star James Dean died violently in an accident while driving his brand-new $7,000 Porsche 550 Spyder, nicknamed “Little Bastard,” from Los Angeles north to a scheduled race in Salinas, California.

It’s all covered in Porsche 550 Spyder which is limited to 1,550 copies.

Your purchase here includes a fact book by a renowned Porsche expert.  This bonus book is complete with comprehensive information on the development of the vintage Porsche 550, including technical data.
