Stuttgart/Leipzig.  The 21st Leipzig Opera Ball attracted more than 2,200 dancing enthusiasts to the city in Saxony on Saturday.  Porsche once again sponsored the ball this year.  During the event, an announcement was made that Porsche AG would be renewing its contract with Opernball Leipzig Production GmbH and that the partnership would be extended for another three years.

“Social responsibility is very important to us as a company, especially at our production site in Leipzig”, said Dr. Oliver Blume, Chairman of the Executive Board of Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, during his conversation on Saturday with the host of the Leipzig Opera Ball, Kim Fisher.  “We’ve been manufacturing sports cars for our customers for 13 years here in Leipzig, and we want to give back something of this success to the city and its people.  We’re therefore very pleased to be able to continue our partnership with the Leipzig Opera Ball.”

Chairman of the Supervisory Board Dr. Wolfgang Porsche attended the Leipzig Opera Ball for the first time this year and was enthused by the event and the city.  “Leipzig is a wonderful city with a very rich cultural heritage and tradition”, said Porsche.  “The purpose of our commitment to the city is to help preserve Leipzig’s historical and artistic treasures.  As a sports car manufacturer with roots in Swabia, we are greatly honored and pleased to have found a second home in Leipzig.”

The slogan for this year’s traditional citizen’s ball was “Shalom Israel” — in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Germany and Israel.  This year, Porsche once again donated the grand prize for the traditional Opera Ball tombola, enticing guests with the possibility of winning a Cayman painted in Indian Red with a retail value of €73,000.

As always, the proceeds will be donated to the charitable foundation Leipzig hilft Kindern (Leipzig Helps Children).  The foundation will use the money from this year’s tombola to support an association that helps diabetic children and teenagers and an organization that provides aid for people who suffer from mental illness with a particular emphasis on supporting their families and friends.

The third charitable project this year spotlights Israel as this year’s partner country of the Opera Ball, as it helps traumatized children from Israel to visit Leipzig.  “The tombola is a matter of the heart to us because every year its proceeds give us the chance to open up some opportunities for a better future for the youngest people in difficult situations in Leipzig”, said Siegfried Bülow, Chairman of the Management Board of Porsche Leipzig GmbH.

Porsche also presented the L.O.B. Sophisticated Fashion Award for the first time this year.  The award, which was created in 2008, honors young designers for outstanding ball dresses.  The creation by Phalaphol Tatone won over the eight members of the jury at the Leipzig Opera Ball’s Fashion Show on Saturday.

“Mr Tatone made a big impression, particularly in terms of his harmonious overall concept, the complexity of his design and the perfect workmanship”, said Dr. Joachim Lamla, Financial Director of Porsche Leipzig GmbH who presented the award on behalf of Porsche.  In addition to €2,000 in prize money, the up-and-coming designer from the Stuttgart area will enjoy an internship at the Porsche Design Group.

Porsche Macan GTS

Atlanta.  Porsche announces the new Macan GTS.  With more power, a reengineered suspension, unique GTS-specific exterior and interior appointments, and new connectivity options, the new Porsche Macan GTS provides an enthusiastic driving experience that enhances the current Macan range.

Based on the 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine in the Macan S, the Porsche Macan GTS incorporates hardware changes and a unique engine calibration to allow the engine to develop 360 hp at 6000 rpm and 369 lb.-ft. of torque between a broad 1650-4000 rpm.

The rest of the all-wheel-drive powertrain matches up to the Macan Turbo; Porsche’s seven-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission is combined with Porsche’s Traction Management system (PTM) that actuates an electro-hydraulic, multi-plate clutch to variably engage the front axle depending on traction needs.  All told, this powertrain package accelerates the Macan GTS to 60 mph in as little as 4.8s in conjunction with the optional Sport Chrono Package and up to a top track speed of 159 mph.

Porsche’s Stability Management system is also recalibrated for this application, and when combined with the Sport Chrono package, it provides an even more dynamic driving experience.  Large 360 mm front rotors, with six-piston fixed calipers finished in red, and 330 mm rear rotors, with single-piston calipers also painted in red, provide the braking force needed for performance use and assist with torque vectoring, via Porsche’s optional Torque Vectoring system (PTV).

Air suspension, including Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM), comes standard on the Macan GTS.  This combination provides adjustable ride height and damper stiffness. These parameters help optimally tune the car for virtually any driving condition.  Macan GTS specific suspension tuning also includes a 10-millimeter reduction of standard ride height, compared to the Macan Turbo, further lowering the center of gravity.

The Macan GTS is characteristically recognized by the many black exterior accents.  The window trim is finished in high gloss black, there is a matte finish on the lower body and the Porsche Macan GTS designation on the rear hatch, and the standard 20″ RS Spyder Design wheels are finished in Satin Black.

Side blades, located in the lower portion of the doors, are matte black with GTS logos in contrasting gloss black.  The Macan GTS will be available with optional LED headlights that feature Porsche’s unique four-point daytime running lights, as well as a cornering light function.

On the inside, the Macan GTS features a standard leather package and GTS sport seats with Alcantara® seat centers and GTS logos on the headrests.  An optional GTS interior package, featuring a Carmine Red tachometer and deviated stitching, seat belts, and embroidered GTS logos on the headrests is also available.

The standard PCM (Porsche Communication Management system) includes Sound Package Plus, eight speakers, a USB and aux-in interface, SiriusXM® and HD radio™, and Bluetooth® capability.  An optional PCM with Navigation module includes a hard-drive based navigation system that supports 3D navigation display, satellite image overlays, and dynamic route calculation.

Two connectivity systems are optional:  available for the standard PCM is Porsche Connect, which provides Apple CarPlay™ integration.  Porsche Connect Plus is available for the PCM with Navigation system.

Connect Plus expands on Connect by including a hot-spot capable LTE modem for connectivity.  Passengers can surf the web, while the driver can access real-time traffic, and even transfer destinations and calendar appointments from a smartphone into the PCM.

Stuttgart.   Precautionary recall: Porsche is conducting an examination of 58,881 of Macan S and Macan Turbo vehicles around the world, of which 3,641 are in Germany.  The reason for this move is a possible leak in the low-pressure fuel line inside the engine compartment. The line will be replaced in the workshop. This is a purely precautionary measure.

Affected are only gasoline engines.  The problem was identified after a precise examination of complaints and then immediately rectified in ongoing production.  Owners of the vehicles will be contacted directly by their responsible Porsche dealers.  Workshop appointments will be arranged as quickly as possible. The work will take roughly one hour and will be carried out free of charge.

 Get Informed First . . .

Buying a sweet Porsche 914-6 or 914?  Before plopping down your cold, hard-earned cash or signing on that loan document’s dotted line, beware of the following Porsche 914 pitfalls lurking in the shadows of ignorance:

  • Buying a Sweet 914-6: Seen here is the left-rear 914 Fuchs wheel at Colorado 54th Porsche Parade, 2009Rust in the following areas:
    • below the battery
    • along the chassis longitudinals
    • along the windshield frame, and
    • at the jacking points
  • The clutch tube is susceptible to breakage:
    • inside the chassis tunnel, and
    • at the firewall
  • Suspension movement can damage the mounts if the rear suspension console nuts come loose
  • Out-of-sight service costs resulting from extremely tight engine spaces in which to work
  • Costly oil leaks are as common as in all early 911s, and
  • The shear scarcity of original replacement parts

Just be on your toes — and be sure to conduct a pre-purchase inspection (PPI) by going to our “Porsche Pre-Purchase Inspection (PPI)” page.  There you’ll find professional mechanics near you who can ably perform the PPI for you.
