Well, college basketball’s March Madness has come and gone — and so has all Porschephiles’ March Madness of the 2017 Porsche L.A. Literature, Toy and Memorabilia Meet Weekend of festivities, events and open houses. No worries, though. Re-live that splendid Porsche weekend here.
And what a fantastic weekend it was! If you’ve never experienced this annual mind-blowing Porschephile weekend, you must make it a point to immerse yourself in all of the activities in the future. They usually take place on or around the first weekend in March.
Click here to get a general overview of the annual L.A. Lit and Toy Show itself
Whether you’ve enjoyed the festivities before or not, I’ll briefly recap the weekend so you can live (or re-live) it vicariously. All shops, vendors and events are listed by date below and in alphabetical order.
So let’s roll . . .
The 2017 Porsche L.A. Lit Meet Show Weekend Festivities
The centerpiece of this annual event-filled Porsche weekend in Los Angeles is what this year was officially known as “The 34th Annual Porsche and Vintage VW Literature, Toy & Memorabilia Meet.”

It’s also known as the “Porsche Lit Meet,” for short, obviously in its 34th year now.
But this is the first year offering bus tours to most of the daily L.A. County and Orange County events orbiting the 2017 L.A. Porsche Lit & Toy Meet Show on Sunday. This was a great way for both national and international out-of-towners to enjoy the festivities during this 2017 Porsche L.A. Literature, Toy and Memorabilia Meet weekend.

The bus tours made it super-easy for those unfamiliar with the Southland’s wacky weekend traffic patterns, as well as the heavily congested and far-flung Southern California freeway system. What a great way to improve upon the 2017 Porsche L.A. Literature, Toy and Memorabilia Meet Weekend.
The Porsche L.A. Lit Meet’s Week of Festivities kicked off on Thursday. Unlike some of you lucky pups, I have a j-o-b. To keep it, I have to show up more often than not to keep up appearances of some modicum of productivity, at the very least.
Consequently, I was unable to attend and chronicle any Thursday events. But I’ve listed them so that you can still get the flavor of the first day. I’ve visited many of these Open Houses in past years, though.

Friday, March 3, 2017

Auto Kennel – Porsche vintage classic-car sales and Porsche pre-owned car sales in Costa Mesa, Orange County, California

Owned and operated by Paul Kramer (714-335-4911) and Ed Kramer (310-633-1065), Auto Kennel had some nice Porsches on sale to admire and dream about owning during its Open House — including one sweet black Porsche 928 (above) that wasn’t for sale.

Auto Kennel sells its own vehicles. It also provides a consignment service for those who don’t want to deal with the hassles and potential fraud that are commonly associated with private “sell by owner” scenarios.

Callas Rennsport – Porsche repair, maintenance and tuning, as well as Porsche restoration and pre-purchase inspection in Torrance, Los Angeles County, California

The Callas Rennsport Open House, hosted by Tony Callas himself, included several Tech Sessions as its contribution to the 2017 Porsche L.A. Literature, Toy and Memorabilia Meet Weekend.
These Tech Sessions covered discussions on the history of the world-record-setting 911R No. 001, the history and restoration of the 1971 914-6 in the shop (below), and an M9X engine session, among others.

A light continental breakfast was served in the morning, and lunch was catered in the afternoon.
Founder Tony Callas was blessed with quite an impressive early education and career immersed in working on Porsche cars and race cars before opening Callas Rennsport, his renowned Porsche service, repair and restoration operation.

Suffice it to say only briefly in the narrow scope of this piece that Tony Callas apprenticed first as a young lad under his father, Mike Callas, an accomplished Porsche mechanic and Porsche race-team participant in his own right.

Tony Callas then went on to study under the tutelage of such distinguished mentors as Adrian Gang at Edelweiss Porsche, Alwin Springer at ANDIAL and legendary Vasek Polak.

Be sure to take note that Tony Callas will personally perform Porsche pre-purchase inspections for you. Who better to perform this critical, indispensable service for you?

L.A. Dismantler – Porsche dismantler, salvage junkyard and used Porsche parts sales in Sun Valley, Los Angeles County, California

L.A. Dismantler specializes in only Porsche vehicle parts extracted from later-model 911, Boxster and Cayman vehicles, from 1980 through today’s model years. L.A. Dismantler is a salvage junkyard, dismantler and used Porsche parts provider all in one.
Only problem is, there is sadness and despair when you first lay eyes on all those twisted, mangled, demolished Porsche cadavers stacked three bodies high in the L.A. Dismantler junkyard.

But that despondency is slightly soothed and calmed once you realize these disfigured wrecks so close to our Porschephile hearts are much-needed donors providing parts for all of our Porsches still on the road.
Just keep telling yourself that, and hopefully you’ll be okay in surviving that shocking initial visual trauma. . .
You can see it all up close and personal by visiting L.A. Dismantler at 9819 Glenoaks Boulevard, Sun Valley, California 91352. Call them for parts at 818-767-7243, or check out their website using the link below.

Nicolas Hunziker Designs – original Nicolas Hunziker-designed Porsche art, posters, prints, watches, apparel, T-shirts, and driving shoes in Torrance, Los Angeles County, California
For its part during the 2017 Porsche L.A. Literature, Toy and Memorabilia Meet Weekend, Nicolas Hunziker Designs held its Open House in Torrance. It’s worth noting the stark contrast between the space’s nondescript exterior and the vibrant, exquisite motorsports artwork contained within the walls of that vanilla exterior.

The Design studio is just a door down from Klasse 356 Parts, and a few blocks south of Callas Rennsport.

The Nicolas Hunziker Designs address is 4040 Spencer Street, Suites A & B, Torrance, California 90503. Hunziker Designs is near Los Angeles, Lakewood, Gardena, Long Beach and San Pedro.

The best thing of all was that we were able to buy Mr. Hunziker’s merchandise and artwork on the spot.
Not quite having the total $75,000 in pocket change on me at that time, though, to buy one of the priceless McQueen paintings seen above, I instead bought a pair of Hunziker-designed Martini Racing driving shoes. Very cool! And even cooler when on — very, very comfortable.
I wore them over the course of the entire day, and they still felt comfy even up until taking them off after getting home. I also bought some nice T-shirts bearing Mr. Hunziker’s Porsche artwork.

TRE Motorsports has been in business over 30 years. Its garage component, TRE Automotive, is one of the most respected and patronized independent Porsche repair and maintenance shops in Southern California.
In fact, TRE Motorsports has worked on some of my Porsche cars over the years. I took my very first Porsche – a 1977½ 924 — to TRE Motorsports way, way back in the early Eighties when the garage was in its original location on Chandler Boulevard in North Hollywood, California.
I believe at that time the only remaining owner was Dave Bouzaglou. TRE has worked on my Porsches off and on ever since.
TRE Automotive works on all Porsches, from the 356, 911, 912, 914, 924 through 968, 928, Boxster, Cayman, Cayenne, Macan and Panamera, on through to the latest 991.2.

Unlike during last year’s Open House, this year my wife and I got there in time to munch on the shop’s lunchtime fare: The “Grill-Meisters” served up some of the tastiest authentic German Bratwursts I’ve ever had the pleasure to savor. Really. They were that good. But I digress . . .

Two ballrooms, one large and one a little smaller, were jammed with Porsche vendors displaying and selling their wares.

This was the first year that Stoddard NLA LLC ran the L.A. Lit and Toy Meet Show. Stoddard is celebrating its 60th Anniversary this year as one of the largest players in the global Porsche-specific restoration market.

Click here to go to the Stoddard website
Stoddard has taken over from the original Porsche L.A. Lit and Toy Meet Show organizers — PCAers and Porschephiles Prescott Kelley, Wayne Callaway and Jim Perrin, who all started their little swap meet 34 years ago.

Now that little swap meet has grown into a truly world-class, world-famous classic Porsche event that hosts visitors from all over the globe.

If you’ve never experienced a Porsche L.A. Lit and Toy Meet Show, you must do so sometime soon — it’s like being the proverbial kid in a candy store for all Porschephiles, young and old alike.

California Porsches wasn’t listed on the on the Lit Show’s website this year as participating in the 2017 Porsche L.A. Literature, Toy and Memorabilia Meet Weekend, but they’ve always held their own Open House on Saturday.

The Carparc USA Open House spotlighted both Porsche early 911 works in progress and finished works of dazzling art on the showroom floor. Outside, grilled brats and caramelized onions were served on fluffy rolls, along with potato salad. Ice-cold refreshments were also provided.

European Collectibles – Porsche vintage classic-car sales and modern-car sales, and Porsche classic-car restoration in Costa Mesa, Orange County, California
Participating once again in the 2017 Porsche L.A. Literature, Toy and Memorabilia Meet Weekend, European Collectibles held its 10th Annual Open House on this Saturday, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
And what a fine European Collectibles Open House it was. The cuisine included not only tasty hot dogs and tacos from freshly handmade corn tortillas on the grill, but also fantastic charbroiled hamburgers and cheeseburgers grilled on the spot with all the fixins’ you could ask for. Yummy! But yet again I digress on the tasty cuisine . . .
Another feast for the “car-guy” or “car-gal” appetite were the motorcars: The classics on display were numerous, outstanding and memorable, as you can see in these accompanying photos.
European Collectibles was founded by Nick Clemence, and is now owned and operated by Nick, Chris Casler and Jeff Trask. As you can see again by the photos, their restoration services are quite impressive.

Porsche South Bay – Porsche Classic Center – Authorized Porsche dealership and Los Angeles County’s only Porsche Classic Partner, located in Hawthorne, California
Porsche South Bay – Porsche Classic Partner Center hosted its Open House on Saturday from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. as part of the 2017 Porsche L.A. Literature, Toy and Memorabilia Meet Weekend.

German cuisine goodies and beer were served, while several classic Porsche motorcars were on display for the visual appetites of all guests. There was a raffle, as well as other giveaway items.
As of this writing, this is the only Porsche Classic Partner in the County of Los Angeles. The concept behind Porsche Classic Partners is predicated on the fact that more than 70% of all Porsche cars are still on the road today.
As a result, the Porsche Classic Partners’ highly committed goal is to maintain your classic Porsche both with genuine parts and superior service and maintenance.
Porsche South Bay and its Porsche Classic Partner Center are located at 14610 Hindry Avenue, Hawthorne, CA 90505 — near Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, Rancho Palos Verdes, San Pedro, Long Beach and Hawthorne.
The Porsche South Bay dealership, its Porsche Classic Center and GSM Carl Tofflemire can be reached by calling 310-891-2110. As of this writing, Porsche South Bay’s Porsche Classic Partner Center is only 1 of four such Porsche Classic Partners in the United States.

So Cal All-Porsche Swap and Car Display
As part of the 2017 Porsche L.A. Literature, Toy and Memorabilia Meet Weekend, the So Cal All-Porsche Swap and Car Display took place at the Phoenix Club. The German cultural center founded in 1960 is located at 1340 S. Sanderson Avenue, Anaheim, California 92806.

Unfortunately, we missed the So Cal All-Porsche Swap and Car Display. Rain was forecast and fell throughout the day, so we decided to pass. The wife and I didn’t even take a daily driver down to Anaheim, which I do regret after hearing what a massive Porsche turnout there was (please see and use link directly above).
Ever since buying my first Porsche back in 1976, I’ve never driven any one of them in the rain – intentionally. Oh, sure, sure, some if not all of you are muttering something about that being impossible – and I’d have to agree.
The key word was “intentionally” because a time or two or three we have been caught in an unexpected rain shower on occasion.
One such occasion was during the 2009 Porsche Parade in Keystone, Colorado. We took a driving tour of Rocky Mountain National Park to eyeball the Continental Divide. Suddenly a microclimatic downpour drenched us all at close to some 11,000 feet in elevation, including the beautiful silver Carrera GT that had joined us all on the tour.
Anyway, we did indeed miss the So Cal All-Porsche Swap and Car Display this year, which I regret as I did last year when it freakishly rained on that day too in 2016. So much for the drought-inspired song titled It Never Rains in Southern California by Albert Hammond.
