Calling all Porschephiles!  Be the first on your block to build your very own Porsche flat-six engine.  Franzis’ Porsche Flat-Six Engine Scale Model Kit is now available.

What’s that, you say?

You’re not really the Porsche-certified master mechanic that you’d like your fellow car-guy pals to think you are?

No problem.  This exciting Porsche project is almost child’s play — and virtually twice the fun for kids of all ages — especially for all Porsche enthusiasts like us.

What is it, you say?

It’s Franzis’ Porsche Flat-Six Engine Scale Model Kit, based on the 2.0-liter early-Porsche 911 boxer engine, from the 1966 model year to be exact.  That naturally aspirated engine was spec’d at 130 horsepower produced by way of a single overhead camshaft and a 5-speed manual transmission.

And this Franzis’ Porsche Flat-Six Engine Scale Model Kit can be purchased at Amazon.  The kit is distributed by Germany’s Franzis.

Just so you know, for all of us outside Deutschland, Franzis Verlag GmbH is the venerable German publishing house of technical books.  In addition, Franzis now distributes computer-related books and software, as well as products such as this Porsche Flat-Six Engine Scale Model Kit.

This (air)cool 1:4 scale model of the Porsche 911 flat-six engine consists of a transparent engine casing with a spinning engine fan and belts that simulate the actual engine’s timing chains.  The model also includes cams driven by the aforementioned belts as well as a functional gear-driven distributor and LED lights simulating the spark plugs’ firing order.

If all of these detailed features aren’t enough, the motorized rotating assembly comes complete with an electric module that generates sweet, genuine, and highly recognizable flat-six-engine luftgekühlt (i.e., air-cooled) sounds.

Sound too difficult to assemble?

Remember when you were a kid and got that sticky model-glue-in-a-tube all over the place, and especially on your fingers, fusing them together?  (Not to mention giving you that contact-high?)

Well, not a drop of glue is needed to assemble Franzis’ Porsche Flat-Six Engine Scale Model Kit.  All you need is one screwdriver — the one that comes with the scale model kit to use on the included screws to put the kit together.

If that doesn’t sound easy enough, then rest assured that a nifty book with follow-along illustrations comes in the box with the unassembled model.

What’s even cooler is the value-added fact that the book was published in cooperation with the Porsche Museum itself on thee Porscheplatz in Zuffenhausen.  Accordingly, the book chronicles the production history of the Mezger engine, replete with Porsche Archive drawings, photos and posters from the Mezger era.

There are just slightly more than 290 pieces that make up the 1:4-scale Franzis’ Porsche Flat-Six Engine Scale Model Kit.

Once you finish your own flat-six masterpiece, all you have to do is install the three required AA batteries and fire it up.

And then, presto! — you can check out the rotating assembly through the transparent casing and watch the firing spark plugs, all while savoring those mellifluously familiar air-cooled engine notes.

What could be (air)cooler than that?
